The Mortal Remains

The mortal remains

Steadfastly remain

This morning

Tread firm earth

Tentatively

Seek new rhythm

For the future

Make the pace

To slow the last years

So they scarcely seem

To pass at all

The mortal remains

Defiantly remain

This morning

Write images

To draw the day out

At the speed of light

Till time flows back

Towards birth

And beyond the sickness

To the day

Creation began

With a slow start

The mortal remains

Tenaciously remain

This morning

Drag themselves

Towards the next

Night’s sleep

And the cyclical

Waking from it

That follows

Tomorrow

If the mortal remains

Are to remain

For one more morning
