When I start to die
Wheel me out into the garden, please
And lay me on the lawn
I’ll want to smell the flowers then
Watch the tall grasses sway
Above my head, hear the croaking frog
And see the blackbird
Do battle with the worm.
I’ll want to feel the wind
And rain on my face
Hear the small song
Of the earth around me
Reach out and taste
My last raspberry
Or a sweet fig hanging from the fence.
Take me out into the garden
And lay me on the lawn
Bend to me and kiss my lips
So I may know that I was loved
And wipe away my final tear.
Take me out into the garden
And lay me on the lawn
So I can give it all to you.
